A typical human being is not going to think of the things to do in order to stop sinning. According to Proverbs 16:25, there is a way that seems right to humans, but in the end, it will lead to death.
That means that even Christians will never be able to pick the right path without help from God, and this is why we are instructed to deny ourselves and follow Jesus Christ. We cannot live by what we think, but we have to allow the Word of God to reveal the truth to us.
Read the following verses and see just how much we need to deny ourselves, and then you will be able to understand one of our biggest problems.
You see as we speak against what is written in our Bibles, we can fall away from what is actually written to the point of it not even coming to mind (Mark 4:24-25, 1 Timothy 6:20-21, John 5:38). That means that eventually we will begin to think that the path that we were on, before we accepted Jesus as the Lord of our life, is okay, but it’s not.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. NKJV
34 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law'; 36 and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.' 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. NKJV
There are two things that you need to realize here about the Christian life right now. The people who speak against the verses above, and the other verses that I will show you, do not have them living on the inside of them like they are written (John 5:38).
38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. NKJV
I’m not saying that they are bad people, or that they don’t mean well, but if verses like the ones I will show you on this website, and in my books were living in Christians today, there would be no need for this website or my books. The Word of God needs no assistance from me to work all by itself on the inside of those who believe it (1 Thessalonians 2:13, Jeremiah 23:22).
The second thing is that if you do not believe the verses that I will show you, they will not remain in you either. Nor will they come to mind when you speak about the Christian life. Nor will they work on the inside of you to change you (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
It will be as if they do not exist, and you will re-join the ranks of those who willingly speak against the faith, and cannot figure out why they cannot stop sinning. Know that for yourself as you read the verses throughout this website.
Is there any value in always speaking in line with what the Bible says? If a man is never at fault in what he says, he will be perfect in God’s sight, and have the ability to control his body (James 3:2).
If we could control our whole body, would we have an addiction? Is it even possible to have an addiction, and have the ability to control our body at the same time? There should be no such thing as an addiction for Christians, but there is because we disobey the message (1 Peter 2:8).
Here is another promise making the Word abide in us. If we abide in Jesus by obeying His commands (John 15:10), and His Word abides in us, we can ask whatever we wish and it will be done for us (John 15:7). Can you use any of that? Lord willing, I will help you position yourself to use that promises. Let’s get started.
Not only do we need to deny ourselves, but we are also instructed not to lean on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Therefore, living the Christian life means that we are going to deny what we would naturally think, and simply trust what God instructs us to do in accordance with His Word.
In the video series, “How To Stop Sinning” the basics (part 1 and 2 above), I discuss ten methods that all Christians should be using in order to stop sinning (verses included).
If you do not recognize the verses that I will mention in the videos, then you will think that they have nothing to do with controlling sin in your life. However, that’s far from being true. You will need to deny what you think, and trust the verses that I will show you from God’s Word.
People of this world always focus on the destruction, or the type of sin they are caught up in, such as abusing drugs, alcohol, anger issues, sexual sins, and the like. However, there is not a different set of instructions in the Bible for each of those sins, which is the reason why I rarely focus on the type of sin, but on the solution to all sin.
Christians who are born of God do not continue in sin that leads to death, point, blank, period, and I want to show you the methods we are to use in order to stop sinning in accordance with God’s Word. After reading the following verse you will realize that something is not right about what we have been taught about sin in this country. You can believe the Word of God, and allow me to show you what to do, or you can deny the following verses even exist like millions of Christians today. The choice is yours, but this may be the last time anyone in this country will warns you.
1 John 3:7-9
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. NKJV
My name is Alan Ballou. I am a Bible teacher by the grace of God, and the author of "How To Stop Sinning any type of sin. I will teach you what is right, and how to practice it, free of charge. If you have any questions concerning sin, please contact me.
If you have read “Can We Stop Sinning” , and “Should We Stop Sinning” , then you already know that all Christians need to stop sinning, and that we must obey Jesus according to the Gospel message that we should be hearing (Romans 15:15-19). So the question isn’t whether or not we can stop sinning, or should stop, how do we stop sinning?
In the "How To Stop Sinning" videos (the Basics part 1, and part 2), I discuss ten methods that every Christian should know and put into practice within the first four years of being saved (Luke 13:1-9). Millions of Christians today have no knowledge of these methods and are falling away from the faith a few years after they accept Jesus as Lord. That's a tragedy because everything that I will teach you is clearly written in the Bible they have. Learn these verses for yourself, since any of us can fall away, and be cut off according to the doctrine of Jesus Christ (John 15:1-6).
Every method that I have learned and tested over the past twenty years is explained in my books “How To Stop Sinning any type of sin,” and "Stop Sinning and Be Healed," which I have marked down to .99 ¢ through Amazon.com.
However, I will help you even if you do not buy one of my books, since I didn't learn it on my own, but the Lord revealed it to me. This is something that every Christian should know, especially those who have been in church for years, and surely those who teach the Bible should know it. If you have a question concerning how to stop sinning, ask. I help believers, who want to stop sinning, free of charge.
There are many different methods written in the Bible that instruct us in how to stop sinning. Our biggest problem is that we don’t believe them, and whoever does not believe that God has the power to do what He has promised will never receive what He has promised (James 1:5-7).
Now, most Christians will tell you that they do believe without realizing they have a problem. However, we can’t possibly believe what we speak against. There will never be a Christian who says that we cannot stop sinning, or even says “Amen” to such teaching, that will have the ability to stop sinning. When we speak against the faith, we fall away from it (1 Timothy 6:20-21).
Does the Bible say that we can cease from sinning in the following passage of scripture? If you speak against it, you don't believe it, and that's the first reason why you will not receive it.
1 Peter 4:1-3
4 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. NKJV
My friend, there are preachers in this country with thousands of well-meaning followers, and in some cases hundreds of thousands, that willingly stand you and shout against verses like the one above with bold faces. Not only that, but they will fight against anyone who mentions them. It happens to me all the time, but just like the disciples of Jesus 2000 years ago, it’s not me who they reject, but the one who sent me to speak.
Yes we have all fallen short of the glory of God, but that same God has provided a way for us to never fall again. My question to you is, "Do you believe God?"
2 Peter 1:10-11
10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. NKJV
Can you trust Him? Notice the condition in the verses above; "if we do these things." What things? Read 2 Peter 1:5-9 and find out for yourself, but one thing is for sure. If you do not believe the methods that I will show you, which are clearly written in the Bible, then they will not work for you, and they will not remain in you either (John 5:38, Mark 4:24-25). That means you will soon have no knowledge of them, and so, like everybody else, you will willingly speak against them in unbelief.
Let me share this with you. By using the word "method," I mean procedure, process, or course of action. I’m not talking about anything new or anything that is not already written in the Bible, which you will see in just a second. I wanted you to know that because one of my critics speaks against my use of the word “method” as if I am trying to teach something new and different, or adding to the Word of God. No, the people who are adding to the Word of God use words like, "Go have a personal relationship with Jesus," which is not a part of our instructions found in the Bible.
The instructions I will give you are not only in the Bible, but I will show them to you in black and white. Take Galatians 5:16 below as an example.
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. NKJV
If we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. That’s one method we are supposed to use in order to stop sinning, and there are many such procedures written in the Bible, which I will show you in this article.
Basically, that passage of scripture, as well as the other methods that work to stop sin in our life, is saying “if we do our part” (follow the instructions) we will have the results that are promised. What’s promised is that we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Our part is to walk in the Spirit. It’s just that simple and it works just like it is written without adding anything to it.
That's just one method out of the ten. Learn that passage of scripture for yourself, and put it into practice, being careful never to speak against it (Romans 10:6-8). These verses do not remain on the inside of those who do not believe them (John 5:38). That's why most never preach them, and come up with their own unwritten doctrines, which Jesus told us to watch out for (Matthew 15:8-9).
8 "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" NKJV
Watch out for ppeople who teach man-made doctrines, such as "Go have a personal relatuionship with Jesus," as if that is what Jesus has sent us to preach. Jesus sent His disciples to preach the Kingdom of God (Luke 9:1-5), and to make disciples through baptism and teaching them to obey Jesus (Matthew 28:18-19). For more on what we should be preaching (Kingdom teaching), see "Who will inherit the KIngdom of God."
Obeying Jesus is another method to stop sin in our lives. We have to obey Jesus in order to abide in Jesus (John 15:10), and if we abide in Jesus we will stop sinning.
1 John 3:6
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. NKJV
Do people who only hear “Go have a personal relationship with Jesus” know that we have to obey Him? No they don’t, and those who do not obey Jesus will never abide in Him, or come to know Him according to 1 John 3:6 above. Those who do not come to know Jesus will be weeded out of the Kingdom in the end (Matthew 13:40-41). See "What is sin that leads to death" to learn more about who will be weeded out of the Kingdom of God.
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!' NKJV
Obeying Jesus is a part of the Gospel message that we all should be hearing (Romans 15:15-19), but most Christians today, never hear a complete message. See "Who will inherit the Kingdom of God" so that you will know what is actually a part of the Gospel message that we should be hearing today, and what is not. Most of us have no idea that the Bible doesn't instruct us to go into all the world to have someone say a sinner's prayer, but to preach the Gospel. Preaching the Gospel should be our main focus (Mark 16:15-16), and repentance from sin is a part of that message (Mark 1:15, Luke 24:47).
15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. NKJV
What other methods should Christians be using to stop sinning? Knowing the truth can set us free from being a slave to sin according to John 8:31-37.
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." 33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, 'You will be made free'?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. 37 "I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. NKJV
Notice two things about the verses above. First, they were ready to kill Jesus, not because they didn’t like Him, but because His Word had no place in their hearts (verse 37 above). Let that sink in.
Most Christians do not realize the power already contained in the Word of God, but it is able to turn God’s people from evil all by itself.
22 But if they had stood in My counsel, And had caused My people to hear My words, Then they would have turned them from their evil way And from the evil of their doings. NKJV
For more information on the Word of God and how it works on the inside of us, all by itself (1 Thessalonians 2:13), see “The Word of God is enough.”
What other methods should Christians be using to stop sinning? Speaking the Word of God as it is written is also very powerful. If we believe the Word of God, we should be speaking it like it is written (2 Corinthians 4:13, Romans 10:6-8).
For more on this subject, see “Why Christians cannot stop sinning,” and the article “If we can stop sinning, why do so many say that we can't?” One of the reason why Christians cannot stop sinning, is because we say that we cannot, which is speaking against what the Bible says; speaking against the faith. In doing so we can fall away from the faith according to 1 Timothy 6:20-21.
What else can we do to stop sinning? We have to add a few things to our faith in accordance with the Word of the Lord, written in 2 Peter 1:5-11 below.
2 Peter 1:5-11
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. NKJV
Yes we have all stumbled and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), but there is a method written in 2 Peter 1:5-11 by which we can never stumble again, and receive a rich welcome into the eternal Kingdom. We need to know this, so make a list of those things written in the verses above if you are serious about stopping sin in your life.
We won’t be able to just starting doing these things from day one without a good dose of God’s grace, but we put them into practice until we learn them, and we repent when we don’t keep them; working out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12, below).
Philippians 2:12 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; NKJV
Some people are quick to say, “it’s not a fear as in being afraid, but a respectful kind of fear like reverence,” but my friend the Word of God will bring with it the type of fear that we humans need in order to do what we are supposed to be doing if we would just read it.
We should fear Him, Who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). Sadly some people will not fear Him until they realize what is meant by gnashing teeth on the last day. That’s when they will realize they had the wrong type of fear.
I want you to be sure and fear the Lord to the point of having the following verses come true for you. Therefore, don’t allow anyone to trick you into thinking that the Lord is not to be feared. His is a friend to those who obey Him (John 15:14).
Psalm 25:14 14 The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant. NKJV
Psalm 33:18-19 18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, 19 To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. NKJV
Psalm 34:7-9 7 The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, And delivers them. 8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. NKJV
Psalm 85:9 9 Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, That glory may dwell in our land. NKJV
Psalm 103:11-17 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. 14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. 17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children, NKJV
Psalm 145:19 19 He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them. NKJV
Psalm 147:11 11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. NKJV
Luke 1:50 50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation. NKJV
Revelation 19:5 5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying, "Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!" NKJV
What other methods can we use to stop sinning according to what is written in the Bible? Suffering, separation, and being a slave to righteous acts is also covered on the “Why Christians cannot stop sinning” page.
